Declawing

Welcome to Maltese Puppies Rehoming, where the health, comfort, and long-term well-being of our Maltese puppies always come first. One of the early care steps we focus on is proper dewclaw maintenance, which is often misunderstood or confused with “declawing” in cats. These procedures are completely different.

Declawing in cats involves removing the last bone of each toe and is considered inhumane. Dewclaw care in dogs, however, simply involves maintaining the small extra toe located higher up on a puppy’s front legs (and occasionally back legs). At Maltese Puppies Rehoming, we do not remove dewclaws; they are carefully left intact and properly maintained.

Why We Care for Dewclaws

Safety

Maltese puppies are playful, energetic companions. Regular dewclaw trimming helps prevent snagging or injuries during play and daily activities.

Health

Routine maintenance reduces the risk of tearing, infections, and discomfort while keeping your puppy comfortable and healthy.

Breed Standards

Natural dewclaws are often preferred for high-quality Maltese puppies, helping preserve the breed’s natural appearance.

Our Commitment

Every puppy from Maltese Puppies Rehoming receives a strong and healthy start in life, including:
